Chrome: This extension is no longer available because it doesn't follow best practices for Chrome extensions

Chrome is now say it will not load the RescueTime extension. I could not find anything here about it. Will the extension be updated?

Hey Patadeloso!

As you may know, Chrome is rolling out changes to extensions that will impact many extensions, including ours. The good news is that you don’t need the Chrome extension for RescueTime to work properly.

If you’ve installed the Windows or Mac desktop app, your time spent on websites in Chrome will still be tracked. The only users significantly affected by this change are Chromebook users, which represent a very small portion of our user base.

We’ll revisit our approach to the Chrome extension down the road, but for now, since it’s not critical to RescueTime’s functionality, we’re holding off on significant development until the situation stabilizes.

Thanks for your understanding!

Best,

JP

Well, finally got around to checking into this, and it’s bad news! I’m only using a Chromebook and Android these days, so it is critical to RescueTime’s functionality for me. Guess it is time to look into your competition’s products!

@jpmyers You say that the only usecase this affects are Chromebook users but that’s not quite true. I have had to switch from a Macbook to a Linux-operated laptop for my work, and as you’ll probably know the Rescuetime desktop app is not available for Linux users. I was hoping to mitigate against this by at least tracking my online time with the browser extension, but appears that’s not possible either because Google has disabled the extension for Chrome? Feel like I’m being squeezed on both sides and if I can’t find some solutions my annual RescueTime subscription might soon start looking a lot less useful…

As Chromebooks become more capable, more and more people will be switching to them as the computer they take with them when they travel, etc. I think you’re making a mistake by not having a RescueTime extension for Chrome. Please reconsider this. Thanks!

I’m a Linux user, and now that Chrome extension was forcefully disabled, I don’t see data about visited websites, only “google-chrome” app.

It seems like after 11 years of using RescueTime I will have to find a replacement :frowning: Really sad.

Please fix this!!! It’s now affecting my Windows 11 Chrome… Need this badly!

Completely agree with you, while the Linux app is not available, the Chrome extension was a rescue to see analytics, as I use it mostly for browser work.((

this is really bad. I am working regularly at the office (and Laptops) of two different clients, and I simply cannot install Rescue Time Desktop there!

I just got my entire business switched over to Rescue time before I realized. Many people use Chromebooks. I’m so disappointed! I figured in modern times something as big as this would be usable on all devices. It also isn’t tracking the time I work on my Android phone. So a large amount of my time data is lost. I hate that I wasted all the time getting set up. But it was dumb of me to not research it more.

@jpmyers Would Rescuetime be willing to open source your the code for the chrome extension or the old linux application? The community could then at least take a look and see if something could be done to use the Manifest V3 API instead of the Manifest V2?

Open Sourcing it would be great, would also be willing to chime on development (already tried to do this with activity-watcher, but is lacking a strong platform behind it)

Hey Ben,

Thanks for proposing that… let me talk with the team and see what options we have. Appreciate your support!
